Sonja Livingston to direct our post-graduate workshop in 2009!!!!

The University of New Orleans Low-Residency MFA and Study Abroad Programs is pleased to announce the creation of the Post-Graduate Writing Institute and Conference Abroad option in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. This program will offer alumni and other interested MFA degree holding writers the chance to come to the summer program and work at an affordable price. To participate, you must have earned your MFA by January 1, 2009.

For the post-graduate program fee participants will be able to attend all films, readings, lectures, and excursions available to regular student participants. They will also gain entrance to several post-graduate forums, focusing on issues such as editing and ordering a manuscript, publishing and disseminating work, and maintaining a sense of community in the post-MFA writing world. Participants may be invited to speak in the workshop classes on a one time basis, but will have no class responsibilities, and no academic credit will be awarded. Housing may be arranged through the program coordinators, or participants may elect to find their own housing. All food, housing, and transportation costs are the participants responsibility.

Also, please note that post-graduates will participate in a multi-genre workshop led by Sonja Livingston, winner of the 2008 AWP Book Award in Non-Fiction, and who also writes and publishes in other genres. This workshop will focus on issues of polish and order, with all feedback geared towards publication, and participants may exchage their work prior to the beginning of the program in San Miguel. Book length works are acceptable with prior approval. Upon arrival, students will outline a project to the class that they wish to be working on during their time in San Miguel. This project may be anything from new writing to editing of previous work - its the stuents choice. Participants will then read from their work on the final day.

Post-Grad participants will also have the option of reading during our reading series.

A manuscript consult with one of our faculty or visiting guests is also available for an extra fee. This will be available only to participants in the post-graduate program. For the fee, a visiting writer or faculty member will read a manuscript and offer insight, advice, feedback, and publication venue suggestions.

This workshop is for those working in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. We may also be able to accomodate screenwriters and playwriters - please email for more info. We will also be hosting a panel discussion on Life After the MFA.

Please feel free to email with any questions!
