Admission

Admission to The University of New Orleans Creative Writing Workshop-Low Residency (CWL) is highly selective and is based primarily on the quality of the applicant’s writing. Your writing sample, therefore, is the most important part of your application. In putting your sample together, you should emphasize quality rather than length. Your writing sample should be in a single genre, the one in which you intend to specialize.

Please note that an applicant must hold a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university. No exceptions can be made to this requirement.

Completed Applications Due:

Summer/Fall: January 1

Spring: October 1

Please be sure to read the entire page before emailing with questions. As a Low-Residency program, we endeavor to have all of our information readily available on our website.

HELPFUL NOTES

Uploading your personal statement and manuscript : We now accept manuscript submissions only through Submittable. Before you go to the Submittable portal, you should prepare your manuscript document. Your personal statement should appear at the beginning of the document, followed by the creative manuscript.

About Transcripts: The University requires offical copies of transcripts from all colleges or universities you have attended, not simply the one that granted your degree. If you have transfer credit on your transcript, we must also have official transcripts from the institution that granted that credit. Note also that "official" means that the transcript is issued from the institution that granted the credit directly to the University of New Orleans. Sealed transcripts issued to the student are not considered official. In most cases, official transcripts can be ordered from the web sites of the issuing institutions. NOTE: this applies ONLY to transcirpts sent to the UNIVERSITY. The Creative Writing Program asks only for an unofficial copy of your transcript.

Application Fees:

There is a $20 application fee (plus late fees, at certain times) for the University Application. The Program Application is free.
