23rd Ezra Pound International
Conference
Rome, Italy
June 30 - July 4, 2009
ROMA AMOR: Pound, Love and Rome

Note: The deadline for proposals has passed. See this page for conference registration and attendance info.
The 23nd Ezra Pound
International Conference will be held in Rome, a city that figures prominently
in PoundÕs work and one where he spent significant time. The site of the 2009
meeting, sponsored together with the Centro Studi Americani (Center for American Studies), will be the
Palazzo Antici Mattei, a remarkable
late sixteenth-century palazzo that is now an extensive library and cultural
center, with an archive of over 10,000 volumes donated by American professor of
history Harry Nelson Gay after his death in 1932. Located in the very heart of
Rome, it is a few steps from Piazza Venezia,
MichelangeloÕs Campidoglio, and the Forum, and a 10-
to 15-minute walk to the Pantheon, the Trevi
Fountain, and other significant sites. Besides offering proximity to these
historic sites, the conference has tentative plans for excursions to Lake Nemi on the Albian Hills, the south coast, and Siena, as well as for events
in Rome.
The conference committee
invites proposals for papers on any aspect of the meetingÕs theme, as derived
from PoundÕs 1942 palindrome in ÒA Visiting CardÓ:
We
think because we do not know.
R O M A
O M
M O
A M O R
And later, in Canto 93, he added, ÒAmphion!/ And yet for Venus and Roma/ a wraith moved in air.Ó
Proposals may interpret or apply the conference theme
in specific or broad terms, relating to any aspect of PoundÕs work and life:
poetry, prose, translations, textual analysis, biography, comparative studies,
literary or political influence, and/or historical matters. Proposed papers on other
aspects of Pound are also welcome. Proposals from postgraduate and younger scholars
are particularly encouraged.
If
you are interested in giving a paper, send a synopsis of your proposal
(about 250 words) to the Secretary. Emailed proposals, as well as those sent by
surface mail, are acceptable. Presentations should be limited to 20 minutes
delivery time. To be sure of receiving registration information and details
about lodging and excursions, please also write to the Secretary:
