Edinburgh has a long literary tradition, going back to the Scottish Enlightenment. Edinburgh's Enlightenment produced philosopher David Hume and the pioneer of political economy, Adam Smith. Writers such as James Boswell, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Sir Walter Scott all lived and worked in Edinburgh. J K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter novels, is a resident of Edinburgh. Edinburgh has also becomedine associated with the crime novels of Ian Rankin, and the work of Irvine Welsh, whose novels are mostly set in the city and are often written in colloquial Scots. These canonical writers are just a small sampling of the hundreds of writers who have called Edinburgh home at some point. As a further testament to Edinburgh's literary reputation, it has been declared the first UNESCO City of Literature--a truly esteemed honor.

Edinburgh also hosts the Scottish Poetry Library, home of one of the most vibrant and active poetry scenes in Europe.

The nearest international airport is the Edinburgh Airport. The Edinburgh Airport, like many European airports, is easily accessible from any city.

The program will provide excursions to nearby historic sites, and participants are also welcome to travel independently on weekends. The rest of Europe is at your fingertips when in Edinburgh, as it connects to many other cities via planes and trains.
